Wireshark is a network analysis tool that enables users to examine the contents of network communications by studying the underlying protocols and intercepted data packets. The bottom section of the tool provides a hexadecimal display that presents the details of each captured data packet. To efficiently analyze the data, Wireshark offers an extensive filtering system that allows users to selectively choose data packets for further examination while discarding others. The tool enables real-time capture, but the analysis can be conducted offline and reviewed through the program's dedicated interface or with the assistance of TTY or TShark, a command line tool that comes bundled with Wireshark. Additionally, Wireshark possesses the ability to extract compressed data files instantly using GZip and decipher encrypted protocols like IPsec, ISAKMP, Kerberos, SSL/TLS, and WPA/WPA2. It also supports the processing of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Wireshark is compatible with various devices and networks, including Ethernet, IEEE 802.11, ATM, Bluetooth, USB, Token Ring, and Frame Relay, among others. Furthermore, it offers support for multiple capture file formats such as tcpdump, catapult DCT2000, Cisco Secure IDS iplog, Microsoft Network Monitor, and Network General Sniffer. Moreover, Wireshark allows users to export captured information in XML, PostScript, CSV, and plain text formats for further analysis and integration with other tools or platforms.
